A LIST OF ANTAGONISMS: TORONTO, ON
Hiba Abdallah
September 16 - September 30, 2021
1200 Dundas St. W., Toronto, ON, M6J 1X4
Presented by Bunker 2 Projects and Long Winter as part of Together Apart Festival 2021
Post-parking lot eviction, Bunker 2 positioned itself in another land lot slated for condo development. In response to this temporary placement of the shipping container, located at the corner of Dundas and Lakeview, we asked Hiba Abdallah to create a new iteration of work engaging the social and political economy of cultural spaces.
Hiba Abdallah's A LIST OF ANTAGONISMS is an ongoing public text series that has appeared in multiple cities across Canada. The project lends itself to the wider discourse surrounding the anxieties, tensions and history shared across changing communities. The text reflects oppositional viewpoints and utopic outlooks for how we might begin to rethink the values we want to carry forward into our collective future.
In this version of A LIST OF ANTAGONISMS, Abdallah’s text wrapped a shipping container in a parking lot surrounded by new real estate development. The work grapples with the neighbourhood changes and questions ideas of power, advocacy and the implicit and complicated role artists play in gentrification, more generally.
